Modeling a plastic chair
In this tutorial we'll learn to model a plastic chair.Plastic Chair
We'll start this month with a new 3D Studio Max tutorial. Today we'll learn to model a plastic chair for kids.
As usual, the starting point will be a Box. This time the box has the following parameters: Length: 100, Width: 100, Height: 20, Length Segs: 7, Width Segs: 7, Height Segs: 2.
Convert the Box to an editable polygon. Choose which side will be the back of the chair. On this side select the highligted polygons one by one and resize them to 135% along the edge axis. You can use percent snap to make things easier. Next, select all resized polys and Inset them 2 units.
Extrude the selection 70 units.
Extrude once more, this time 60 units. Select the four polygons highlighted above and delete them.
Go into Border subobject mode (shortcut: "3") and select a pair of facing borders. Hit the Bridge button to link them with new polygons. Repeat this step with the second pair of facing borders.
Select the side polygons of the chair back and Extrude them 10 units. Go into Vertex subobject mode (shortcut: "1") and select the top row of vertices, like in the above image. Resize the selection to widen the top of the chair back.
Now add to the selection the second row of vertices and rotate a bit the whole selection in the Left View, to give the back an angle.
Move the selected vertices backwards a bit so that the chair has now a straight back part. Back to polygons. On the bottom side of the chair select the four groups of polygons highlighted above.
Inset the selection using Group as Inset Type and an Inset Amount of 8.
Bevel the selection using Height: 90 and Outline Amount: 8. Bevel it again, this time using Height: 2 and Outlne Amount: -5. Switch to Edge subobject mode. For each leg select the three rings of edges that define the leg's shape. Chamfer the selection using an amount of 0.25 - 1.0 units.
Now select the edges that define the shape of the back of the chair and chamfer them as well with 0.25 - 1.0 units.
Finally select the edges that define the shape of the original box and chamfer these as well 2.0 units. Add a MeshSmooth modifier with 3 iterations and your plastic chair model is finished.
